Women who drink beer several times a week might be at higher risk for developing psoriasis, according to a new study released recently in the Archives of Dermatology.
Researchers looked at drinking habits among 83,000 women age 27 to 44 who were part of the Nurses’ Health Study II. From that group, they analyzed 1,069 cases of psoriasis that occurred in a 14-year follow-up period.
Women who had an average 2.3 drinks or more per week had a 72% greater risk of having psoriasis than women who didn’t drink. But when various types of alcohol were assessed, there was a higher risk for the disease among women who drank regular beer. Other alcoholic beverages did not increase the risk of psoriasis in this study.
Women who drank at least five regular beers a week were 1.8 times more apt to contract psoriasis than women who did not drink.
Why does drinking beer increase the risk of psoriasis?
Researchers believe the stronger link may have to do with the fact that beer uses starch for fermentation–usually barley. Wine uses fruit, and although liquors such as vodka use starch for fermentation, typically that starch has been separated from the liquor during the distillation process.
Barley contains gluten, which may be linked with psoriasis, since those with the disease may have a dormant gluten sensitivity. Light beer’s lower grain content might explain the fact that it wasn’t associated with psoriasis. This research confirms previous research which indicated that gluten-free diet may improve psoriasis in patients who are sensitive to gluten.
In the study, the authors noted that women who have a high risk of developing psoriasis might think about not knocking back too many regular beers per week.

Tea tree oil does work very well but it’s runny and hard to apply
I just want it gone I had it without drinking I know stress adds alot
My psoriasis is hereditary did not show up until I was 19. I have found that tanning, in a salon, works very well. I do drink but this year seems the worst for me and my family in years! My mem 86 vouching for it. I have awful insurance but wouldn’t wanna take the drugs anyways. I have been trying to control it with sea salt, hemp lotion, and tea tree oil. Any other suggestions? It’s spotty on my chest, back, and legs. Of course in my scalp or in my eyebrows too. My dermatologist said it is too mild for even light treatments! Help!
This is an interesting study! Good for everyone to know. Can drinking beer cause psoriasis in men too?
Its interesting to know that how drinking beer could lead to Psoriasis. This information would be helpful for those who are unaware of it.
